Insurance Company - Commercial Production

Students are assigned to work in small groups. Each group will create their own insurance company with a logo, name, and a commercial. The commercial will show whether their group believes an insurance company should be able to deny coverage to an individual based on their DNA profile.

STEP 1

Research

Students need to find at least 2 credible sources online that argue that an insurance company should be able to use DNA testing and 2 more that argue against. A decision should be made by the group, which side they choose to take.

STEP 2

Branding

Students need to design a logo for their insurance company. Research online different insurance company logos as inspiration. Websites like canva.com are available to help in the logo design process, sign-in is required for the full experience. Logos can be created on the computer using software such as Adobe Illustrator or just drawn on paper.

Students are asked to draw a rendering of what their building would look like. Include signage on the front of the building, location in a city, etc.

STEP 3

Commercial

Storyboard

Create a simple storyboard of your project. What scenes do you need to film? How many locations? Number of actors? Props that are needed? etc.

Script

Write a script for your commercial. The worst thing that you could do is to get everything ready and not know what to say.

Filming

This can be done during class or at home. Phones, iPads, cameras, or any other video devices may be used. Videos are usually more interesting when done outside of school but also some groups are not able to meet together after school either.

Post-Production

Depending on your resources in your classroom you could just rely on the editing software on the student’s device, free software on computers such as iMovie, or more professional software like Adobe Premiere.
